Intoruducing Miss Ridley

I ran across Ms Ridley as I was transferring from L line to 4,5,6 line in Union Square. As I was walking up the stairs, I noticed some crowd. Shortly thereafter Ms Ridley started playing some music in the background and started singing. I captured the first 2 minutes of her singing.

More Paint Bucket Drummers

This couple is trying to raise money for their daughter's sweet 16 birthday. According to the sign next to the bucket where they collect donations. They are pretty good and in sync (most of the time).

The question is that I have seen this couple play before at the exact spot a couple of months ago. However, back then I was not obsessed with taping the musicians of the subway. I wonder what the sign next to the bucket said then.

Enjoy their music.

Training street musicians

As I started blogging about NYC street musicians, my friends started sending me tips about similar videos and interesting musicians. Here is a video about The Malloys - who have directed numerous White Stripes videos - followed Oasis last September in the lead up to the release of their number one album, 'Dig Out Your Soul'.

Liam, Gem and Andy travelled to the City of New York (http://www.nycgo.com) where they taught street musicians to play a number of the new songs. The selected street musicians came from all parts of the city, and had a variety of different ethnic, musical and creative backgrounds. The street musicians rehearsed and then performed the previously unheard new songs at locations throughout the City including MTA approved subway station platforms at Grand Central, Times Square, Penn Station and Astor Place, subtly premiering the album before it came out.

The Malloys followed Oasis and the street musicians through the process and created the 18 minute black and white documentary.

Classic Musicians of the Meat Packing District

These gentlemen can be found at the 14th street A-C-E line stop almost once a week in the evenings. The violinist is pretty amusing and talented. I once have witnessed him whistle to two very attractive ladies using his violin only and no lips :-) I wish I had more time to tape their performance. Maybe next time I see them I will.

NYC Subway Blog: Drummers of Union Square

This is a new blog that is dedicated to all musicians on NYC Subway stations. Lately, I have been noticing more and more musicians perform at the subway stops and I've decided to video them and bring them some fame.

The following video is of a gentlemen who can almost every other evening be found on the uptown 4-5-6 platform at Union square. I was very impressed with his talent. He has great rhythm and speed. He often reminded me of overtipped drummers of NYC night clubs. Only if this poor men performed at those clubs, he could easily make 50 times more money.

Here he is. Enjoy his music and do not forget to check back on my blog for more NYC subway musicians.
